John M. Sharp


John M. Sharp, Duncan, was born in 1903, 16 miles east of Lawton in the Nellie Community. He entered Cameron in 1919 and received his high school diploma in 1923. He was active in football, baseball and basketball. He also was active in Debate Club, Hi-Y Club and Delphic Oracle Literary Society. In the sports section of the 1923 Wichita yearbook, it is printed "John is the only man on the (football) team who boasts four service stripes...a real field general and good passer." He received an accounting degree at the Duncan Business College and worked as an accountant for Halliburton Cementing Company for 42 years, retiring in 1968. He coached Halliburton's baseball team and the Boy's American Legion team during the late 1920s and early 1930s. He served on the Duncan City Council for 10 years, worked with the Duncan Chamber of Commerce and has been a Kiwanis Club member for 38 years. He is a member of the Christian Church. Since his retirement, he spends each winter in South Texas and visits Colorado during the summer. He has one son. (Mr. Sharp died in November 1998)
