Students selecting the non-teaching degree track acquire a strong foundation in sports marketing and management, and organization and administration of recreational, collegiate, corporate, and/or professional sports/fitness programs. In developing this foundation, students receive diverse instruction, laboratory/clinical application, and real world placement opportunities aimed at the acquisition of knowledge and skills needed to pass a variety of rigorous certification examinations that require expertise within the following categories: functional anatomy and biomechanics, exercise physiology, human development and aging, pathophysiology and risk factors, human behavior and psychology, health appraisal and fitness testing, emergency procedures and safety, exercise programming, and nutrition and weight management. Upon completion of the degree program, students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in using computerized laboratory equipment to accurately input, analyze, interpret, and report data regarding human physical performance as well as demonstrate successful leadership skills, training abilities, teaching strategies, and management and marketing of programs/organizations seeking to enhance the quality of life for its membership, rather on an individual basis or at the professional or corporate level.

Health & Physical Education

Major: Physical Education Teacher and Coaching (K-12)

Students selecting the teaching degree track acquire a strong foundation in pedagogy frameworks and theoretical underpinnings that foster a multidisciplinary approach towards development of physical education curriculum that emphasizes promotion of lifetime health, physical fitness, and well-being of K-12 school-aged learners. In developing this foundation, students receive specialized instruction, laboratory application, and early observation and placement opportunities within diverse school settings that preface the knowledge and skills needed to pass the Oklahoma certification examinations (OPTE & OSAT) which require proficiency within the following categories: functional anatomy and biomechanics, exercise physiology, human growth and development, fitness assessment-testing-modification, adaptive techniques, emergency procedures and safety, nutrition and weight management, effective coaching responsibilities, and administrative duties specific to sports/activity programs. Upon completion of the degree program, students will be able to demonstrate expertise in using computerized laboratory equipment to accurately input, analyze, interpret, and report data regarding student(s) physical performance as well as demonstrate successful communication/collaborative skills, teaching strategies, classroom management practices, parental involvement techniques, inclusion and modification implementation, integration of technology, coaching strategies, and administrative duties towards maintaining a healthy lifestyle for K-12 physical education students and athletes.
