Visiting Author

Rilla Askew

Award-winning author, Rilla Askew, spoke in the Cameron University Library on April 18, 2008.  Mrs. Askew, a Poteau native, discussed her novel, Fire in Beulah, which is set during Tulsa’s Greenwood Race Riot of 1921.  She told the audience of her research for this novel and of the difficulty of writing from two perspectives:  African American and middle class white.  She said Oklahomans, as well as the rest of the nation, should discuss race relations past and present more openly.  Faculty and students enjoyed the opportunity to learn about historical fact and fiction.
