Cameron University’s student-produced documentary, “North of Austin/West of Nashville: Red Dirt Music,” has been selected for screening at the second annual Southern Winds Film Festival, held from September 11-13 in Shawnee. The documentary feature, which is nominated in the category “Best Okie Feature”, will be shown on Saturday, September 13 at 5:15 p.m. at the Hornbeck Theatre. Tickets for individual films are $5 each; all-access and one-day passes are also available. Produced in summer 2007 by CU students under the guidance of Dr. Matt Jenkins, CU Professor of Communication, the documentary presents an in-depth look at the music and musicians that make up Red Dirt music. It was honored as Best Student Music Documentary at the April 2008 Barebones International Film & Music Festival in Muskogee and has been shown at numerous film and music festivals. The Southern Winds Film Festival was established in 2007 to promote emerging independent filmmakers, foster an environment of interaction and exposure in the filmmaking craft, and bring the passion of filmmaking to the Shawnee, Oklahoma community. Awards will be determined by a panel of judges; the winning films will be announced on Saturday, September 13. For a complete schedule, go to www.southernwindsfilmfestival.com.
