Scholarship opportunities available for CU students

Although Cameron University's fall semester doesn't begin until August 18, scholarship opportunities are still available. Cameron's Office of Financial Assistance encourages CU students to apply for a variety of scholarships that have summer deadlines. Abbott & Fenner Business Consultant Scholarship
The A&F Scholarships of $1,000 are available to all high school juniors and seniors as well as all students currently registered in any accredited post secondary institution. All applicants should include their full name and mailing address with their submissions. To apply for this scholarship, applicants must write an essay between 500 and 1000 words on the following topic:

• What do you see as the long term impact of our current recession on the average family? How might it affect their future decisions?

BigSun Scholarship

The BigSun Organization offers $500 scholarships to student athletes, regardless of which sport they are participating in. The student must be a high school senior or be attending a post secondary institute.

To apply, submit a short essay answering the following question:

  • How has your participation in sports affected the person you are becoming?

Gen and Kelly Tanabe Scholarship

The Gen and Kelly Tanabe Scholarship is a merit-based program that helps students fulfill their dreams of a higher education. The scholarship is named for Gen and Kelly Tanabe, best-selling authors on education. The award amount is $1,000 and is available to 9th-12th grade high school, college, or graduate student including adult students. Applicants must be currently in school or planning to start school within the next 12 months. To apply submit an essay of 250 words or less on one of the following:

  • Why do you deserve to win this scholarship?
  • Describe your academic or career goals.
  • Any topic of your choice.

AmeriGlide Achiever Scholarship

The AmeriGlide Achiever Scholarship is available to full-time college students who use wheelchairs. One $500 scholarship is awarded each semester. Applicants must submit a 500-word essay, must use a manual or electric wheelchair, must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and must be a legal resident of the U.S. or hold a valid student visa.  Submission of character references is optional. To apply, submit a 500-word essay answering one of the following questions:

  • What area of your school do you think would benefit from improved accessibility and how would you improve it?
  • What area of your school do you feel has excellent accessibility and why?

Wyatt F. and Mattie M. Jeltz Memorial Scholarship

The Wyatt F. and Mattie M. Jeltz Scholarship Foundation provides scholarships for minority students to pay college related expenses such as tuition, fees, room and board, books and supplies, loan repayment, etc. To be eligible, a student must be enrolled full-time in an Oklahoma accredited college and have earned 30 credit hours, with cumulative grade point average of at least 2.8. Financial need and good character are also criteria to be considered. The deadline to apply for the fall award is August 15. An application is available at http://www.cameron.edu/financial_aid/scholarships.
