The Cameron University chapter of the Student Oklahoma Education Association (SOEA) was named Outstanding SOEA Chapter 2009-10 at the organization's statewide convention earlier this month. Criteria taken into consideration for the honor included increased chapter membership, chapter meetings, communication, and projects.
"I'm so proud that our SOEA chapter has been recognized as the outstanding chapter in the state of Oklahoma," says Dr. Ronna Vanderslice, Dean, School of Education and Behavioral Sciences. "The students involved in Cameron's SOEA chapter have certainly earned this recognition through their hard work and community service."
During the convention, chapter representatives presented a portfolio that chronicled their achievements over the past year. Some of the activities were monthly meetings that featured guest speakers such as Heather Sparks, 2009 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year, participation in Family Math Night at Edison Elementary, and last month's community service project at Swinney Elementary, during which SOEA members painted health and fitness murals on the wall of the gym. Additionally, Melissa Price, Cameron's SOEA president, held a state office as OEA delegate, representing all Oklahoma student chapters.
Membership in the CU chapter of SOEA is open to all students who plan to become teachers.
