Cameron University staff members Janie Harrell and Lynn Lackey are the recipients of the Spring 2010 semester's Pickaxe Awards, which recognize full-time Cameron employees who have made an extraordinary effort on Cameron's behalf. Harrell is an Enrollment Specialist who is retiring later this year after 31 years of service. Lackey is Benefits Administrator in the Office of Human Resources. Each received a $500 stipend and a certificate commemorating the award.
The Pickaxe Award is presented each semester to recognize full-time employees whose performance exceeds the expectations of their job descriptions. The award recipients will have made a contribution and/or commitment that has resulted in a significant difference to Cameron students, visitors, or other employees, or whose commitment to their job responsibilities, department, or the university stands out as a clear example to all other employees. Award recipients must have been employed full-time at least one year at Cameron. Nominations were made by Cameron students, faculty and staff. Recipients were selected by the university's Executive Council.
Janie Harrell has "enrolled more students here at Cameron than we can count," says one of the many staff members who nominated Janie for the Pickaxe Award. An enrollment specialist since 1979, she is arguably Cameron's most knowledgeable resource about enrollment. In that time, she has earned a reputation for being calm under pressure, patient and kind. As noted in her nomination, "Janie has continually shown professionalism and compassion to students, faculty and staff regardless of the task at hand. She has also expressed camaraderie and selflessness among fellow co-workers and willingly offers her assistance with any project within the department."
Others noted, "Never have I received anything but the utmost cooperation and assistance from Janie," and "She is always a delight to work with and has remained a positive, upbeat, caring, ‘what can I do to help' type of person. Janie always displays this excellent attitude with students, faculty and staff."
Lynn Lackey, who joined the Cameron staff in 2007, is responsible for administering the comprehensive benefits package that is available to eligible Cameron employees. One nominator said of Lynn, "Her entire day is dedicated to helping other employees here at CU; when she is not helping them, she is assisting someone else in the office with their job...Lynn is one of the few people I know that puts others first both inside and outside of the workplace."
Over the past year, she has been a key role in the university's transition to a new integrated Web-based data administration software application, while at the same time managing a major change in the benefits package. "Lynn's hard work and dedication made this transition a success," said one of her peers in nominating her.
