Cameron University’s Department of Music celebrated the accomplishments of its student during its annual awards ceremony. Awards were presented in several categories.
Concert Band awards were presented to Lorenzo Diaz, and Fatima Rivera, Duncan; and Melissa Delgado and Grant Johnson, Lawton. Rivera also received the Beth Adcock Award, and Diaz received the Jazz Ensemble Award.
Percussion Ensemble Awards went to Lawton residents Michael Barnes, Sabrina Harrell, Grant Johnson and Jonathan Phelps; Quinton Williams, Duncan; Kimberly Garza, Iowa Park, Texas; and Natasha Branch, Seattle, Wash. Branch also received the Composition Award.
String awards were presented to Matthew Stringfellow, Lawton (guitar); Tyler Farmer, Geronimo (guitar); and Spenser Jones, Oklahoma City (cello).
Ho-Ying “Tristi” Chan of Hong Kong received the William Fletcher Piano Award, and Elizabeth Hill of Tacoma, Wash., received the William Fletcher Music History Award.
Winners of the Dave Sandstrom Award, for outstanding contributions by non-music majors, were Mike Elbert of Lawton for band and Mary Baumann of Comanche for choir.
In the vocal category, Melissa Delgado was named Diva, and Jonathan Phelps was named Divo. Jordan Brickhouse of Altus was honored as Most Improved Singer, Amanda Richey of Cache was acknowledged for Musical Theatre Achievement, and Brielle Capps of Lawton received the ACDA Choral Award. Members of the Centennial Singers, comprised of Capps; Anthony Clark, Joshua Hale, Harrell, Jonathan Miller, Phelps, Anjelika Ramsdell, Prudence Rivera, Stringfellow and Melinda Taylor, all of Lawton; Haley Loller, Anadarko, and Jarod Grice, Frederick, each received recognition with a special award.
Chan and Grice were inducted into Pi Kappa Lambda, the national music honor society, and Grice was named Cameron University’s Presser Scholar, receiving a scholarship from the Theodore Presser Foundation.
Other scholarship awards included Kathryn Hickman Scholarship in piano – Delgado; Schubert Music Club Scholarship –Rivera and Capps; Lawton Music Teacher’s Association Scholarship – Jiha Choi, South Korea; and the Philip and Aldine Cash Endowed Scholarship - Stringfellow and Amanda Morales, Lawton.
McMahon Foundation Scholarships were presented to Brickhouse; Capps; Choi; Clark; Jamie Crawford, Geronimo; Ashley Arbour Creed, Norman; Delgado; Kassandra Duran, Lawton; Farmer; Garza; Ruben Ghimire, Kathmandu, Nepal; Jamie Hatcher, Lawton; Alyson Hays, Marlow; Jennifer Nixon, Lawton; Ramsdell; Richey; Rivera; Stringfellow; and Alysa Yates, Elgin.
