Cameron University Collegian takes top honors from Oklahoma Collegiate Media Association

Cameron University’s student-produced newspaper, The Cameron Collegian, received the Award of Excellence for Overall Newspaper for the 11th consecutive year at the recent annual conference of the Oklahoma Collegiate Media Association. The top award of the competition recognizes the student-produced newspaper as one of the best four-year public college newspapers in the state of Oklahoma. Jim Horinek, a senior from Duncan, is The Collegian’s managing editor.

In addition, The Collegian won the Award of Merit for Front Page Design and an Honorable Mention for Interior Page Design. For the former award, the judges cited the “nice look” and “great color use,” then went on to say, “Headlines, packaging, photos and copy blocks work together for a clean, balanced, reader-friendly design.”

AggieCentral.com, Cameron’s student-run convergence media news site, received an Award of Merit in the Online Newspapers Category. Comments from the judges about AggieCentral.com noted “a lot of well-produced video segments…something that a lot of other colleges aren’t doing – or at least as well as you are” and “The site design is clean, organized and looks very progressive…you do great work.”

Michael Faggett, a senior from Dallas, Texas, earned a first place award in Multimedia Storytelling for his work on CUTV and AggieCentral.com. The judges noted, “AggieCentral is exactly where journalism programs should be heading…The CUTV Newscast is very well done…Overall, the stories are interesting, the editing good, the narration good.”

Altus resident Rachel Engel, Collegian News Editor, earned a second place award in Editorial Writing for “Note to Sissy: Happy Birthday,” in which she reflected on life with her younger sister, sharing the lessons learned from growing up with a sibling. Of the piece, the judges wrote, “Great sharing, nice tribute.”

The Collegian, the official student newspaper of Cameron University, began publication in 1926. It is distributed on CU's campuses in Lawton and Duncan and is free. The Collegian is also available online at www.AggieCentral.com.
