The Coed team from Cameron University’s Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program topped the field in the Coed (OK/AR) Ranger Challenge Competition, held at Camp Gruber near Muskogee in mid-October. In addition, one of CU’s two men’s teams finished second overall in the men’s competition. Members of Cameron’s Comanche Battalion also took top honors in team and individual categories.
Cameron’s Comanche Battalion faced off against ROTC squads from the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University, the University of Central Oklahoma, University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, Arkansas State University, University of Central Arkansas and University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
“The cadets from the Comanche Battalion trained extremely hard for this competition,” says LTC Rod Boles, Chair, George D. Keathley Department of Military Science. “Their training resulted in outstanding results and represented Cameron University well against the other regional universities. We are very proud of all their accomplishments and hard work.”
Cadets on the top-finishing coed team were Joshua Barnett, Houston, Texas; Ariel Bergeron, Lawton; Nenita Chambers, Lawton; Tyler Graham, Geronimo; Johnnie Kaapuwai, Moore; Eric Perez, Snyder; Ebony Starr, Lawton; and Quinton Thompson. Members of Men’s Team 1, which claimed second place overall, were Briar Bohach, Mustang; Caleb Ellis, Lawton; William Fleshman, Lawton; Bryce Higginbotham, Snyder; Patrick Hornsby, Geronimo; Michael Ortner, Billings, Mont.; and Jesus Pereira, Wahiawa, Hawaii. Men’s Team 2 was comprised of Jordan Baxter, Lawton; Eli Hernandez, El Paso, Texas; James Howarth, Port Orange, Fla.; Cody Jones, Mustang; Christopher Long, Lawton; Juan Orozco, El Paso, Texas; and Joseph Shepherd, Lawton.
Cadet Bergeron took top honors in the Army Physical Fitness Test among female participants, and Cadet Hornsby claimed the same honor in the men’s competition.
Men’s Team 1 took first place in both Land Navigation and One Rope Bridge, and Men’s Team 2 won the Marksmanship Qualification round.
