Cameron University’s 25th Annual Beef Cattle Improvement Conference, presented by the Department of Agriculture, will examine “Management Strategies to Recover from the Recent Droughts” on Thursday, November 15. The event starts at 6 p.m. in the McCasland Ballroom of the McMahon Centennial Complex on the CU campus. There is no charge to attend. “The prolonged drought continues to have a tremendous impact on agriculture throughout the state of Oklahoma,” says Dr. Leon Fischer, Mary Dixie Mullin Endowed Chair in the Sciences and Chair, Department of Agriculture. “The challenges faced by cattle producers – the cost to procure quality hay from other regions of the country, the need to haul water as ponds continue to dry out, and the effect that severe drought conditions have on the health of a herd - are ultimately felt at the consumer level. The expertise of our speakers will address these issues and more.”

Guest speakers include Gary McManus, Associate State Climatologist, Oklahoma Climatological Survey; Dr. Samuel D. Fuhlendorf, Sarkeys Distinguished Professor, Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management, Oklahoma State University; and Dr. Megan Rolf, Assistant Professor of Animal Science, Oklahoma State University.

McManus will address “Evolution and Persistence of the 2010-2012 Drought in Oklahoma.” Fuhlendorf will speak about “Managing Rangelands and Forage Crops during and after Severe Drought.” Rolf’s topic is “Management of Genetic Potential in Replacement Heifers: Fitting Genetics to the Environment.”
