The Cameron University Department of English and Foreign Languages continues its Visiting Writer’s Series by welcoming Dr. Phong Nguyen to campus on Friday, February 3. Dr. Nguyen will read from his collection of short stories, “Memory Sickness and Other Stories” at 7 p.m. in the CETES Conference Center. The event is open to the public at no charge.
“Phong Nguyen’s passion for creative writing is equaled by his ability to craft thoughtful, compelling characters and situations,” says Dr. Bayard Godsave, Assistant Professor of English and Foreign Languages and coordinator of Visiting Writer’s Series. “We are pleased to bring him to the Cameron campus to share his work.”
“Memory Sickness and Other Stories,” won the 2010 Elixir Press Award for Fiction and has been called “a superb debut” full of stories that “pulse with poetry, power and grit.” William Giraldi, senior editor at “Agni,” said it is “dead-on in its depiction of modern malaise…this book will scar you.”
Nguyen's stories have appeared in more than 30 literary journals in the U.S., including Agni, Boulevard, Iowa Review, North American Review, Mississippi Review, Florida Review, Texas Review and New Ohio Review.
He is an assistant professor of English at the University of Central Missouri, where he teaches creative writing and serves as editor of Pleiades: A Journal of New Writing.
