Applications for Cameron University Presidential Leaders and University Scholars program due February 1

The deadline to apply for Cameron University’s Presidential Leaders and University Scholars (PLUS) scholarship is drawing near. Applications for the PLUS scholarship must be postmarked on or before February 1. The PLUS scholarship provides recipients with a four-year full tuition waiver, a single-room waiver and a stipend during the students' freshman and senior years.  In addition, students participate in a four-year program designed to develop students' potential as leaders, fostering an appreciation of the importance of community service and preparing students professionally to enter the career of their choice.

“The PLUS scholarship is Cameron University’s most prestigious scholarship program,” says Jennifer Holland, Vice President for Student Services. “Students selected to receive the PLUS scholarship receive so much more than a tuition-waiver and housing. Their participation in leadership training and community service sets the stage for their success as community leaders.”

To qualify to apply for the scholarship, students should be residents of Oklahoma, have achieved at least a 24 ACT composite score or SAT equivalent and have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average in high school courses.

To apply, students should provide the following materials: application for admission; $15 application fee; scholarship application; current high school transcript; ACT/SAT scores; résumé detailing extracurricular activities, leadership positions held and awards/honors received throughout high school; essay detailing their most meaningful leadership experience and how that experience will help them as a student at Cameron; and three letters of reference (one from a high school counselor or principal, one from a teacher and one from someone who can detail the student’s leadership potential or experience).

Students hand-delivering application materials should take them to the Admissions Office on the second floor of North Shepler on Cameron's main campus in Lawton, or to CU-Duncan, no later than 5:00 p.m. on February 1.

Applications are reviewed by a committee who selects students to interview for the scholarship.  Approximately 25 PLUS Scholars are chosen each year.

The PLUS scholarship is renewable each semester for students who successfully complete program requirements. In order to retain the PLUS scholarship, recipients must complete a minimum of 12 credit hours each fall and spring semester, maintain a grade point average of 3.00 and maintain status as a full time Cameron student.

In addition, recipients are required to complete a minimum number of 16 service hours per semester. Hours must be service to the community and should not be an activity in the daily routine of the student. Recipients will also participate in group service projects.

PLUS students are expected to be involved on campus, serve in leadership positions in campus organizations, and are required to attend five campus events each semester.

PLUS students also make a four-year commitment to leadership development.  During the fall semester, first-year students are required to enroll in and attend Introduction to University Life, a one-hour course designed to assist students with the transition to higher education. In subsequent semesters, students are required to attend monthly meetings.

Through the PLUS program, students will learn what it means to be a leader. The students will function as leaders and organize various service activities that require implementation of leadership principles. Students study current leadership topics, including communication, ethics, and diversity.
