Cameron University announces housing, board rates for 2013-14

Following approval earlier today by the University of Oklahoma, Cameron University and Rogers State University Board of Regents, Cameron University has set housing and board rates for FY 2014. Rates for residential apartments in Cameron Village and residence hall rooms in the Shepler Center will increase four percent. This is only the fifth increase for housing in the past 10 years. Rates for board and commuter meal plans, adjusting for increases in “flex” dollars, will increase 4.2 percent. The new rates are effective August 1, 2013.

“As part of Cameron University’s commitment to providing students the complete collegiate experience, a variety of affordable housing options is offered,” says Cameron President Cindy Ross. “Much work has been done in Shepler and Cameron Village over the past few years to ensure that the facilities are among the community’s most desired places to live. A long-term housing plan, developed last fall, has identified necessary renovations and purchases over the next 5-10 years in order to properly maintain Cameron Village as a premier residence and to continue to modernize the Shepler residential facility. The new housing rates will help offset those costs and are still much lower than other regional university housing rates in similar facilities.”

In 2011, Cameron was ranked among the U.S. News & World Report’s Short List of “10 Colleges with the Least Expensive Room and Board,” recognizing Cameron’s average rate for room and board during the 2011-2012 academic year as the second-lowest in the nation and 58.5 percent less than the national average of $9,047.

Cameron’s on-campus housing facilities have been filled to capacity for the past four years, and the demand continues to grow. The university will continue to update the Shepler residence halls and to maintain Cameron Village, opened in August 2005, as one of Lawton’s most desired residential facilities. Planning has already begun to remodel two floors in Shepler during the summer of 2013, a project that includes new furniture, flooring, paint and light fixtures.

“Even with the modest increase for food services, Cameron students will continue to pay less than most students at comparable universities and significantly less than the national average,” says President Ross.  The increase in board and commuter meal plans will ensure access to quality food at times convenient to students, will offset increases in costs associated with the university’s food service contract and will provide funding to update the Shepler dining location.

To accommodate students’ preferences and in order to offer increased flexibility in dining options, five board plans will receive an increase in funds available through the “flex” portion of their plan.

Discussions among students, Cameron’s food service provider and university officials are on-going to determine the optimal plan types (the number of meals per week and the amount of “flex” dollars) for FY 2014. These discussions could result in changes to the plan types; however, the redesigned plans will be accommodated within the new rates.
