Cameron University is seeking student volunteers to join the new Diversity Diplomats, who will serve as the face and voice of diversity at the university beginning with the Fall 2013 semester. The Diversity Diplomats will support, serve, promote and deepen the opportunities available to Cameron students to strengthen the university community and continue to maintain an atmosphere on campus that is responsive to and inclusive of diversity. “The Diversity Diplomats will play an essential role in expanding diversity initiatives on campus,” says Taylor Thompson, Coordinator of Diversity Affairs. “Not only will they help provide a healthy and positive environment for students, they will have the opportunity to build their resume and establish references. By conducting workshops and facilitating discussion, these students will gain valuable hands-on communication and leadership skills.”
In order to qualify for membership in Diversity Diplomats, applicants must have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average and be in good standing with the university; exhibit academic excellence, strong verbal and written communication skills, leadership skills and interpersonal skills; be willing to serve and represent the Office of Student Development - Diversity Affairs and interface with the many communities which the university serves; be enrolled and be able to represent the Office of Student Development - Diversity Affairs in a credible manner throughout the entire school year; and be able to attend scheduled mandatory training and agree to the time commitment to fulfill Diplomat duties.
The Diplomats will assist in facilitating workshops/events that are specifically related to diversity and will assist with events such as Cameron’s annual Diversity Celebration, Disability Awareness Day and Women’s History Month. They will also be responsible for planning workshops and events for the campus community.
