Cameron University expands Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service participation with supply drive for United Way agencies

On Monday, January 21, Cameron University will coordinate approximately 400 volunteers for a variety of community service projects as part of the university’s ongoing commitment to the national Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. In addition to the service projects, Cameron’s participation in the Day of Service has been expanded to include a supply drive for local United Way agencies. Member agencies have provided wish lists of supplies they need for the upcoming year. Cameron volunteers will man drop-off stations from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. at three Country Mart locations, Sam’s Club, Staples and Wal-Mart on Quanah Parker Trailway so that members of the community can easily provide the requested items.

“Cameron’s participation in the MLK Day of Service has been incredibly rewarding since we began in 2008,” says Jennifer Holland, Vice President for Student Services. “Our goal with the supply drive is to expand the reach of our participation by providing an opportunity for additional members of the community to have a positive impact on the non-profit agencies who serve so many constituencies here in Lawton.”

Among the agencies that have provided a wish list of items needed are Catholic Charities, Family Promise of Lawton, Lawton Food Bank, J. Roy Dunning Children’s Shelter, the C. Carter Crane Shelter for the Homeless, the Salvation Army, Help Advocacy Center of SW Oklahoma and Roadback, Inc. The wish lists can be viewed online at www.cameron.edu/mlkcelebration/dayofservice.  Community members may either shop at the drop-off locations to provide items on the lists or can bring items from home to the drop-off locations.

Drop-off locations for the supply drive are:

  • Country Mart, 4510 S.E. Lee Boulevard
  • Country Mart, 6734 N.W. Cache Road
  • Country Mart, 902 W. Gore Boulevard
  • Sam’s Club, 802 N.W. Sheridan Road
  • Staples, 1217 N.W. Sheridan Road
  • Wal-Mart, 6301 Quanah Parker Trailway

Community service projects will take place at area community parks, local service agencies and schools. Each volunteer will check-in at his/her work site location at 8 a.m. Project work will continue until 1 p.m.
