Cameron University will celebrate the national observance of Veterans Day 2013 with a series of events aimed at honoring both active duty and retired members of the U.S. armed forces. Veterans Day takes place on Monday, November 11.
“Cameron University is pleased to honor both retired and active-duty service members on Veterans Day,” says Cameron President John McArthur. “The sacrifices of these everyday heroes are great, yet the recognition and appreciation are too often minimal. We invite community members from throughout southwest Oklahoma to join us as we pay homage to those who preserve our freedom.”
President McArthur will be joined by Brigadier General Christopher F. Bentley, Commandant, Field Artillery School and Chief, Field Artillery Branch, Fort Sill, for a special ceremony at 1:15 p.m. in Veterans Grove, located on the north side of Howell Hall. The event will feature Cameron’s Army ROTC Color Guard and talented musicians. The ceremony will begin with the reading of the names of those lives lost since last Veterans Day as part of the National Remembrance Roll Call, following by a minute of silence to honor our nation’s veterans and active-duty service men and women.
During the ceremony, the university will pay special tribute to a fallen soldier, 1st Lieutenant Brandon Landrum. Landrum, a 2011 graduate of Cameron’s Army ROTC program, was killed in Afghanistan in May 2013 while serving our country. A bench in Veterans Grove will be dedicated to Landrum’s memory.
Following the ceremony, Cameron will host a Remembrance Walk through the Cameron campus to see the more than 6,750 American flags on display. Each flag represents a life lost in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Participants will make a one-mile loop through campus along the Aggie Mile to see the four areas where flags have been erected: Bentley Gardens, Graybill Courtyard, Veterans Grove and the Fine Arts Courtyard. The flags will be on display from November 6-12.
Also on Veterans Day, Cameron University and Sodexo will provide a complimentary meal to active duty military and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Shepler Cafeteria.
In addition, the Office of Career Services will provide a resume review service throughout the day. Career Services is located in Ross Hall Room 225.
