Following approval by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, Cameron University now offers a minor in Educational Studies. This minor is ideal for students who want to explore teaching or who may be interested in pursuing alternative certification after graduation. It is open to all students except those who are majoring in an approved teacher education program (Social Studies Education, English Education, Mathematics Education, and Music Education).
“We anticipate that the creation of this minor will help address the teacher shortage that is felt across Oklahoma,” says Dr. Jennifer Dennis, Chair, CU Department of Education. “By offering instruction specific to the practice of teaching to Cameron students who are pursuing degrees in academic areas in which Cameron does not offer education programs, we are also providing Cameron graduates with additional career prospects.”
For example, students pursuing a Bachelor of Art degree in Art or Foreign Languages may opt for a minor in Educational Studies in order to better meet the qualifications of alternative certification should they wish to teach in a public school.
The minor in Educational Studies requires 18 hours of upper level courses offered by Cameron’s Department of Education. Those hours are to be selected from eight different courses which focus on the fundamentals, theory and practice of teaching.
