Cameron University’s Country Jazz Fusion returns for 38th annual concert

Bobby FloresThe Cameron University Department of Art, Music and Theatre Arts will present the 38th annual Country/Jazz Fusion Concert on Tuesday, November 13, with special guest Bobby Flores and the Wagon Wheels Trio. A multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, arranger and vocalist, Flores will perform with the Cameron University Jazz Ensemble and the Cameron University/ Lawton Community Jazz Ensemble. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. in the Cameron University Theatre. Admission is free. The concert is made possible by Cameron University Lectures and Concerts.

Directed by J.D. Little, Assistant Professor of Music and event organizer, the CU Jazz Ensemble and the Community Jazz Ensemble will share the stage with Flores to present an eclectic mix of popular jazz, Western swing and country songs.

The CU Jazz Ensemble has been rehearsing diligently since the beginning of the fall semester. Students Joel Moncrief, Altus; Madison Marshall, Paul Martin and Jason Villareal, Cache; Kelsey Alden-Cox, Irmtraud Bryant, Brittany Curtis, Logan Hale, Jimmie Hinson, Diane Pihulic, Lea TenBrink, Lawton; and Madeline Cox, Muskogee; will be joined by alumni K. Kay Alsobrook and Peter Macias. They will join Flores for a selection of traditional jazz tunes infused with country music. They will perform “Strike Up The Band,” “88 Basie Street,” “C.B. Express,” “Bluesette,” and “Undecided.”

Alsobrook, Bryant, Moncrief and TenBrink will also perform with the Community Jazz Ensemble, joining Monty Booker, Austin Bowling, Brian Francis, Janette Garton, Chip Gibson, Derek Griner, David Jackson, Jo Mietchen, Bill Price, Brandon Radaker, Lonnie Snodgrass, Owen Unger, Wayne White, and Clinton Wieden. They will share the stage with Flores for a set that is made up, for the most part, of Western swing and country music. Numbers include “All the Things You Are”, San Antonio Rose,” “On the Road Again,” “Eighter from Decatur” and “Fly Me to the Moon.”

Bobby FloresIn addition to collaborating with the jazz ensembles, Flores will take the stage as part of the Wagon Wheels Trio.

A popular performer in dance halls across Texas, Flores has shared the stage and/or recording studio with luminaries including Willie Nelson, Johnny Bush, Red Steagall and Doug Sahm. He has been inducted into the Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame, the Country Music Association of Texas Hall of Fame, the Western Swing Society Hall of Fame, and the Western Swing Guild Hall of Fame. He has been named a Living Legend by the Cowtown Society of Western Swing and has won numerous other accolades and honors throughout his stellar career.
