Tickets now on sale for Cameron University’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration

Tickets are now on sale for Cameron University and Cameron Campus Ministry’s 35th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration banquet. This year’s keynote speaker is Bakari Sellers, CNN political analyst, lawyer and activist. He will present “Education, Civil Rights and Equality: Cornerstones for Our Future.” The banquet is scheduled for Monday, January 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the McCasland Ballroom of the McMahon Centennial Complex. Tickets are $40 for adults and $18 for students and are available by calling Cameron Campus Ministry at 580-699-2004. The deadline to purchase tickets is Friday, January 11. Seating is limited.

Earlier that day, Sellers will participate in an informal panel discussion that will focus on the topic of education and which will serve as a great introduction to his keynote address. The panel session, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 2:30 p.m. at Cameron University in the CETES Conference Center. Joining Sellers on the panel will be Dr. Jamie Polk, Assistant Superintendent - Educational Services, Lawton Public Schools, and Dr. Jennifer Dennis, Dean, School of Graduate and Professional Studies, Cameron University.

Sellers made history in 2006 when, at just 22 years old, he defeated a 26-year incumbent State Representative to become the youngest member of the South Carolina state legislature and the youngest African American elected official in the nation. In 2014, he was the Democratic Nominee for Lt. Governor in the state of South Carolina.

Bakari SellersEarning his undergraduate degree from Morehouse College, where he served as student body president, and his law degree from the University of South Carolina, Sellers has followed in the footsteps of his father, civil rights leader Cleveland Sellers. In his tireless commitment to service, Sellers champions progressive policies to address issues ranging from education and poverty to preventing domestic violence and childhood obesity.

Sellers served on President Barack Obama's South Carolina steering committee during the 2008 election and is widely considered a rising star within the Democratic Party and a leading voice for his generation. He was named to TIME Magazine’s 40 Under 40 in 2010 as well as to the 2014 and 2015 “The Root 100” list of the nation’s most influential African-Americans. He has provided commentary and analysis to CNN and MSNBC. Sellers currently serves on the National Council of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).

He has served as a featured speaker at events for the National Education Association, College Democrats of America National Convention, the 2008 Democratic National Convention and, in 2007, delivered the opening keynote address to the AIPAC Policy Conference in Washington, DC.

Sellers practices law with the Strom Law Firm, LLC in Columbia, S.C., and is a political commentator at CNN.
