Make it a Day On...Not a Day Off!

During the 1950s and ’60s, civil rights icon Martin Luther King, Jr. recognized the power of service to strengthen communities and achieve common goals. As he once said, “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve.”

Initiated by Congress in 1994, King Day of Service honors that legacy by transforming the federal holiday honoring Dr. King into a national day of community service grounded in his teachings of nonviolence and social justice. Instead of its being just another day off from school or work, the aim is to make the holiday a day ON, where people of all ages and backgrounds can come together to strengthen their community, bridge social barriers, and move our nation closer to the “Beloved Community” that Dr. King envisioned.

On Monday, January 21, volunteers from Cameron University and the Lawton-Fort Sill community will celebrate "a day on, not a day off" in service to our community as part of the national Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.  Nationally, tens of thousands of volunteers will gather to celebrate in service.  

These MLK Day of Service projects are funded in part by the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency that strengthens communities through service.

PROJECT DETAILS

On-site Check In:  8:00 - 8:30 a.m.
Project Work:  8:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Locations: We are so excited about the projects we have planned!  Here are a few:  Animal Birth Control Clinic, Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club, City of Cache City Park, Center for Creative Living, Edison Elementary School, Eisenhower Middle School, Hearts that Care, Lawton Food Bank, Lawton Public Library, New Beginnings Academy, Oklahoma Blood Institute, American Red Cross, Redemption Church, Salvation Army Thrift Store, Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, CIty of Lawton, Lawton Housing Authority Youth Community Center, and more.

In an effort to outreach to a greater population on the Day of Service, we will be collecting supplies for some of our local United Way agencies.  We need your support!  Check out the our local agencies and their supply "wish lists".  You may drop off your donations from 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. at any of the following locations:

Staples (1217 NW Sheridan Road)
Country Mart (all three Lawton locations)
