The Cameron University Concert Band and the CU Jazz Ensemble will join the Cache High School Band for a program of instrumental Christmas music on Sunday, December 3, at 3 p.m. The concert will take place at the Cache High School Auditorium, 102 W. H Avenue and is open to the public at no charge.
The Cache High School Band, under the direction of Derek Griner, will kick off the concert with “Christmas in a Nutshell” arranged by Chris Sharp, which features excerpts of Tchaikovsky’s classic “The Nutcracker,” with several famous Christmas carols woven in throughout. The Cache High School Band will then perform Alfred Reed’s “Russian Christmas Music,” which has four primary sections: Children’s Carol, Antiphonal Chant, Village Song, and Cathedral Chorus.
The Cameron University Concert Band will join the Cache High School “Highlights from Frozen 2.” This number will see 150 musicians on stage.
“It is a fantastic experience for the CU students and the Cache students to perform together,” says Dr. Lucas Kaspar, director of the CU Concert Band. “There is no better time than Christmas to share our love of music with the community. I hope this is something the CU students and Cache students remember for a long time.”
The CU Concert Band will perform five Christmas selections, beginning with Alfred Reed’s “Greensleeves,” which will feature the woodwind section. That will be followed by John Williams’ “A Home Alone Christmas (Music from Home Alone 2)”, featuring CU percussion major Eddie Clark. Claire Johnson’s “Winter Scenes” will follow. This composition takes the listener through the dark and bleak winter days we often experience. The CU Concert Band will close its portion of the concert with Ployhar’s “Yuletide Sketches,” a compilation of Christmas carols, and Leroy Anderson’s classic “Sleigh Ride.”
The CU Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. JD Little, will enhance its portion of the program with Lillie Wright providing vocals for “White Christmas” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” Ensemble members Peter Macias and Lillie Hodgson will team up for a duet of “Winter Wonderland.” The ensemble will also perform “The Christmas Song.”
