Cameron University staff members Francesca Morris and Christina Willoughby are the recipients of the 2024 Pickaxe Awards, which recognize full-time Cameron employees whose performance is above and beyond expectations. Morris is the community resource coordinator in the Student Enrichment Center, and Willoughby is a coordinator in the Department of Student Housing and Residence Life. Each received a $1,000 stipend and a commemorative award.
Cameron University’s George D. Keathley Department of Military Science has presented awards and scholarships to members of the Comanche Battalion, Cameron’s Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) unit. The Comanche Battalion recognized cadets for meritorious performance in military science, academics, physical fitness, personal achievement and leadership.
Cameron University’s esports team, the Pickaxes, wrapped up the fall season with a milestone, as each of the teams made the playoffs in their respective division. The Pickaxes faced multiple universities across the U.S. and Canada as they competed in Overwatch 2, Valorant, and Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
The Cameron University Foundation has established the Jane Godlove Art Career Development Award thanks to a $10,000 gift from the Leslie Powell Foundation. The endowment will fund a scholarship award to assist deserving full-time Cameron art students who must frame their work for CU’s Senior Art Show and art competitions for which student artwork has been accepted.
Administrative offices at Cameron University will be closed for the holiday season beginning Monday, December 23, and will reopen at 8 a.m. on Monday, January 6, 2025. Classes for the Spring 2025 semester will begin on Monday, January 13.
One of the oldest holiday traditions in southwest Oklahoma returns to the McMahon Auditorium as the Lawton Schubert Music Club and the Cameron University/Lawton Civic Chorus present Handel’s “Messiah” on Saturday, December 14 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.
The Cameron University Concert Band will take music lovers on a music journey “From Sousa to Sleigh Rides” during its upcoming concert on Sunday, December 8. The entertainment gets under way at 2 p.m. in the University Theatre.
Cameron University’s Visiting Writers Series, presented by the Department of Communications, English and Foreign Languages, continues with poet Patricia Bassel on Friday, December 6. Bassel will read selections from her book of poems, “House in Love Country,” in Room 2060 of Nance-Boyer Hall starting at 7 p.m. The event is open to the public at no charge.
Individuals and businesses who want to make a positive impact in the lives of area college students are encouraged to make a gift to the Cameron University Foundation on Giving Tuesday, a national day of charitable support. Giving Tuesday, which rallies people around the world to tap into the power of human connection and strengthen communities, takes place on Tuesday, December 3. All gifts received that day will be earmarked for the Aggie Fund, which provides students with scholarships, provides faculty support and helps to enhance campus facilities to provide better learning opportunities.
