Honor Societies

Is this a real honor?

Each spring, hundreds of Cameron University students receive invitations to join honor societies. It seems natural to ask the question, “Is this a legitimate honor?” – especially if they’ve never heard of that organization before.

Cameron University has a number of honor societies on campus. Most of them are directly tied to a discipline of study, while a few are interdisciplinary. These are all legitimate and the university encourages you to accept their invitation to join if you receive it. You’ve worked hard … you earned it … it’s your privilege to be honored.

Campus honor groups

Below are several national and international honor societies and scholarship programs that celebrate scholarly accomplishment on CU’s campus:

Alpha Phi Sigma - Criminal Justice majors

Alpha Psi Omega - Theatre Arts majors

Beta Beta Beta - Biology majors

Delta Mu Delta -Business majors

Gamma Sigma Epsilon - Chemistry majors

Kappa Delta Pi - Education majors

Kappa Kappa Psi - Band musicians

Lambda Pi Eta - Communication majors

Phi Alpha Theta - History majors

Phi Sigma Iota - Foreign Language & Literature majors

Pi Kappa Delta - Forensics majors

Pi Mu Epsilon - Mathematics majors

Interdisciplinary societies

In addition to these, Cameron University has hosted a chapter of Phi Eta Sigma, an interdisciplinary honor society for first-year college students.

Cameron is also home to one of the most prestigious honor societies in America, Phi Kappa Phi. Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest and largest interdisciplinary honor society. Membership is by invitation only and is extended to the top 10 percent of college seniors and graduate students, and the top 7.5 percent of college juniors.

Founded in 1897, Phi Kappa Phi has more than 280 chapters worldwide. The Cameron University chapter was established during the 1974-1975 academic year. CU is host to one of only five chapters in Oklahoma and is the only regional university in the state with a Phi Kappa Phi chapter. If you receive an invitation to join the Cameron PKP chapter, it is an exceptional honor and one you should seriously consider.

But what about …?

The organizations listed above are the ONLY honor societies sanctioned by Cameron University. That doesn’t mean, though, that they are the only such organizations that operate in the US. There is a good chance that you may receive an invitation to join one of these groups. Some of these are:

  • Alpha Phi
  • National Society of Leadership & Success
  • Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity
  • Society for Collegiate Leadership & Achievement
  • Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges

To be perfectly clear, all of the organizations listed above are legitimate. However, please be aware that they have no association with Cameron University. How did they get your name and address? Under the Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Oklahoma Open Records Act, Cameron University is required by law to provide what is commonly known as “directory information” on students if requested. In the case of each of the groups above, they followed the law and requested information on our student body for the purpose of sending invitations to join. Whether you do so or not is strictly up to you, and you are not required by CU to join any group.
