Biology Club takes top spot during Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge BioBlitz




Cameron University’s Biology Club emerged on top of the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge’s recent BioBlitz, held on National Public Lands Day. During the clean-up event, participants were challenged to record and identify as many plants and animal species as possible with the help of INaturalist, an app designed to assist users to identify plants and animals while generating date for science and conservation.

Not only did club members pick up 16 pounds of trash and more than 6 pounds of recyclable materials, they observed and identified 44 distinct animal and plant species.

Members of the Biology Club include Ramona Villegas, Clinton; James Hayes and Oren Kennedy, Elgin; Solomon Meraz, Oklahoma City; and Glaze Antipuesto, Devonn Doleman, Teanna Doleman, McKalay Estep, Miguel Ingram, Noah Lowry, Monica Murphy, Lydia Park, Ester Perez, Honey Peters, Molly Potts, Marielle Priest, James Ross and Ivette Sarabia, Lawton/Fort Sill.

Patrick McAnerney, an instructor in the Department of Agriculture, Biology and Health Sciences, serves as the faculty advisor for the Biology Club.

The theme for National Public Lands Day was “Working Together for Tomorrow.” The local event was hosted by Friends of the Wichitas.
