Cameron University Percussion Ensemble to present eclectic concert

The Cameron University Percussion Ensemble will present “End Game,” a concert featuring an eclectic repertoire that will include the world premieres of a student-written composition and student-written arrangement. The concert is set for Wednesday, April 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the University Theatre.

Tickets purchased at the door are $10 for adults and $8 for senior citizens, members of the military and non-CU students. Cameron University students, faculty and staff receive one free admission with their CU I.D. Tickets can be reserved by calling the box office at 580-581-2346. Tickets can also be purchased in advance online at https://www.cameron.edu/art-music-and-theatre/events/buy-tickets. (Taxes and processing fees apply.)

“After one of the students remarked that most of the songs we were rehearsing sounded like soundtracks of various video games, the students chose the name ‘End Game’ for the concert, a reference to the final stage while trying to defeat the ‘Big Boss,’” says Khalil Cabrera-Tosado, director of the ensemble. “I think ‘End Game” is extremely relevant because for some students, it’s the end of a very challenging semester and the end of another school year. The diversity of the compositions have challenged the students as each of them tells a very particular story. For many students, this is their first experience reading and performing percussion. Though it has been challenging, the fruit of their hard work is extremely fulfilling.”

Members of CUPE are Mykayla Waller, Altus; Dillon Bodine, Antlers; Jolene Drullinger and Chelsea Mitchell, Cache; Vanessa Cleophat, Winston Hartley, Alyssa Price and Bellamarie Saucedo, Lawton/Fort Sill; Alexander Miller, Ochsenfurt, Germany; and Darnell Collins, Tacoma, Wash.

Highlights of the concert include the debuts of “The Chase,” composed by Collins, who will perform the tune in a marimba solo, and “Sonatina,” a melodic piece arranged by Bodine for instruments that do not have pitches.

Dr. JD Little will join the ensemble on saxophone for Pat Metheny and Olin Johannessen’s “Have You Heard.”

The ensemble will perform Alan Abel’s “Alegre Muchacho” featuring a Glockenspiel solo by Price, who will also perform a timpani solo of the fourth movement of “Gender for Metal,” a contemporary piece that will feature music boxes. Waller will be featured with a xylophone solo on Chris Brooks’ arrangement of “Spinning Song” and will also perform a marimba solo of two movements from Bach’s “Violin Sonata No. 2 in A Minor, BWV 1003.”

Additional numbers are “Trote en Guelga,” a Guatemalan folk song arranged for a marimba ensemble; a marimba septet performing Eric Whitacre’s “Sleep,” arranged by Joby Burgess; and the “Jupiter” movement from Gustav Holst’s “Planets,” performed by a marimba quartet.
