Gilbert’s visual lecture is set for 6 p.m. in the McCutcheon Recital Hall of the Music Building. He will showcase his works in a variety of sculptural media and mixed media paintings and prints. Gilbert will also provide a question and answer period following this presentation.
The exhibition of his artwork, “Back Again,” will open with a reception at 7:30 p.m. in the Art Teaching Gallery, located in the Art Building. The exhibition will be on display Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through March 27.
“The work which I create is a culmination of several factors including, but not limited to, situations past and present, references to nostalgic tendencies, environmental surroundings of popular culture (specifically my own), and an obsession with the depiction of Americana in a nontraditional and unpredictable format,” Gilbert says. “I create work because I enjoy it and am driven to do so. I strive to challenge myself as an artist and a craftsman with each piece I execute. It is my genuine hope that onlookers will appreciate my efforts, but in the end, I do it for myself.”
Gilbert notes that he is currently more focused on working three-dimensionally, both large-scale and small-scale and has been entering outdoor sculpture shows as well as applying for public art proposals. His work is seen throughout the year at invitational, juried or solo exhibitions.
In his artist statement, Gilbert explains that his work “is constantly evolving and exploring pathways I have not taken or shared with an audience. Currently the work I am creating focuses heavily on design elements that were more prominently used in a different time period … with the end result being reminiscent of skeletal remains of a sort. “
After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in art from Cameron University in 1997, Gilbert earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting and sculpting from Texas Tech University in 2001. He taught high school art at Rider High School in Wichita Falls, Texas, from 2008 to 2018 and was an adjunct professor at Midwestern State University from 2016 to 2022. He currently teaches welding at Wichita Falls Career Education Center and has recently installed four large-scale sculptures in Lubbock, Texas, that will be on display for public viewing for the next two years and which are being leased by the Lubbock Arts Alliance in conjunction with the Texas Department of Transportation
Funding for Gilbert’s lecture and exhibition has been provided by CU Lectures and Concerts.
