The Cameron University art program is pleased to present visiting artist Christopher Brizzard, who will present “The Last Ten Years,” a visual lecture, as well as “Figures, Portraits and Still-Lifes,” an exhibition of his artwork, on Thursday, November 7. Both are open to the public at no charge.
Brizzard’s presentation is set for 6 p.m. in the Goodyear Room (Room 100) of the Sciences Complex. He will showcase the past 10 years of his artistic journey through a variety of figures, portraits and still life works.
The exhibition of his artwork, “Figures, Portraits and Still-Lifes,” will open with a reception at 7:30 p.m. in the Art Teaching Gallery, located in the Art Building. The exhibition will be on display Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through December 6.
“I am primarily interested in the intersection of representation and abstraction,” Brizzard says in his Artist Statement. “The tension that occurs when these two forces meet provides an endless source of inspiration. Painting is an infinite game, and one needs to have a sense of direction to try and find their way. An understanding of what has been done before is crucial. I have found it is important to find ways to take chances with your work and keep pushing yourself somehow; predictability soon becomes boring in this arena. One must charge off into the bush at times and you may become lost, but you also may find something. The skills and craft of painting are very important, but at the end of the day, if the work is not interesting to you in some way, it is time to do something radical or move on to the next piece. Don’t expect things to always work out; allow yourself to fail and then try again.”
Brizzard started his formal training in drawing and design with Michael Mentler at The Society of Figurative Arts in 2013. From 2014 to 2017, he studied at Studio Incamminati under instructors trained by Nelson Shanks. He now teaches at The Oklahoma Academy of Classical Art in Edmond and Oklahoma Contemporary in Oklahoma City. He is represented by 1515 Lincoln Gallery in Oklahoma City.
Funding for Brizzard’s lecture and exhibition has been provided by CU Lectures and Concerts.
