Cameron University vocal students will celebrate the genius of one of America’s most important figures in 20th century musical theatre with “A Little Night Music: An Evening of Songs and Scenes by Stephen Sondheim.” This special evening of entertainment takes place on Friday, November 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the McCutcheon Recital Hall. The event is sponsored by a grant from the Southwest Oklahoma Opera Guild and is open to the public at no charge.
During the concert, students will showcase songs and scenes from some of Sondheim’s most iconic musicals, which include “Into the Woods,” “A Little Night Music,” “West Side Story” and more.
Credited with re-inventing the American musical, Sondheim created works that tackled unexpected themes that ranged beyond those normally found in traditional musicals, addressing darker elements of the human experience. His music and lyrics were tinged with complexity, sophistication and ambivalence about various aspects of life. At the time of his death in 2021, he had been honored with eight Tony Awards, an Academy Award, eight Grammy Awards, an Olivier Award, the Pulitzer Prize, the Kennedy Center Honor and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Theaters have been named after him both on Broadway and in London’s West End.
Performers will include Sophia Avila, Marino Valley, Calif.; Vanessa Cleophat, Kirsten Dunn, Charles Jones, Kymbre Muse and Alex Miller, Lawton/Fort Sill; Victoria Moody, Los Angeles, Calif.; Grace Norbury, Joplin, Mo.; and Marckese Williams, Youngstown, Ohio. Dr. Christian Morren, assistant professor of music, will serve as conductor. Danielle Angeloni will provide accompaniment on piano.
Repertoire for this concert include “Giants in the Sky,” “Children Will Listen” and “Agony” from “Into the Woods,” the 1987 Tony-winning musical that intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm folktales, as well as the poignant ballad “Not A Day Goes By” from “Merrily We Roll Along.” Audiences will also be treated to renditions of “The Glamorous Life” and “Send In the Clowns” from “A Little Night Music” and “I Feel Pretty,” “America” and “Somewhere” from “West Side Story.”
