Cameron University senior Sacred Martinez made it to the final round of the Interviewing event, held during the Bob R. Derryberry Memorial Season Opener speech tournament hosted by Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Mo., in late September. Martinez, a biology major, is competing as a member of the CU speech and debate team for the second year.
Interviewing is an experimental event not included in all forensics tournaments. Competitors undergo multiple mock job interviews, during which they are evaluated on how well they listen and respond to a series of interview questions. During the final round, competitors are judged on the strength of a resume. Judges look for clarity, organization, presentation of appropriate resume items that showcase qualifications and experiences, professionalism and more.
Martinez was among 60 competitors from 22 schools in the event, placing sixth overall.
"The Derryberry tournament was a wonderful start to the competition season,” says Katie Stringer, coach of the CU speech and debate team. “It was truly a pleasure to see Sacred excel in interviewing, a much-needed skill after college. I am looking forward to a fantastic year for the team."
