Cameron University’s Visiting Writers Series, presented by the Department of Communications, English and Foreign Languages, continues with poet Patricia Bassel on Friday, December 6. Bassel will read selections from her book of poems, “House in Love Country,” in Room 2060 of Nance-Boyer Hall starting at 7 p.m. The event is open to the public at no charge.
Bassel’s poems have appeared in Oklahoma Today, Third Street Review, Unstamatic; Lucky Jefferson and Hey, I’m Alive. “House in Love Country,” was published in January 2023 by Finishing Line Press. Bassel has been featured on Arizona Public Radio’s “Poetry Snaps.”
A native of Southwest Oklahoma, Bassel loves open spaces and blue skies. Traveling and taking long walks are two of her passions. Her mother and father had a bookshelf full of local history including N. Scott Momaday’s “The Way to Rainy Mountain” and Angie Debo’s last work, “Geronimo: The Man, His Time, His Place.” Bassel grew up with a keen sense of place but also had a wanderlust spirit. She fulfilled her dream of teaching abroad which included one year teaching English in Nice, France, and a 23-year career with the Department of Defense Dependent Schools, teaching French in Europe and the Far East, yet she never lost her love of Oklahoma and the Great Plains. She presently resides in Lawton where she enjoys hiking the Wichita Mountains, sometimes with her partner Brian and their rescue dog Sappho and other times in the company of friends.
The Visiting Writers series is co-sponsored by Cameron University Lectures and Concerts and Sigma Tau Delta.
