The Cameron University Choir will celebrate the joy and unity of music with “Viva La Musica,” a choral concert slated for Thursday, September 26, at 7 p.m. The performance will take place at Lawton’s First Presbyterian Church, located at 1302 S.W. A Ave. The concert is open to the public at no charge; however, donations to Cameron University’s music scholarship fund will be accepted. All donations go directly to music scholarships.
“The First Presbyterian Church is known for its excellent acoustics and inviting atmosphere, which provides the perfect setting for choral music,” says Christian Morren, associate professor of music and director of the CU Choir. “Tom Willoughby, the music minister, and the church congregation have been extremely supportive of Cameron’s music program. It is a privilege to sing in such a beautiful place.”
“Viva La Musica” will feature a mix of Renaissance and contemporary choral music. Willoughby will provide piano accompaniment.
The concert will open with David Brunner’s energetic “Viva La Musica (Long Live Music),” an exuberant work that opens with a strong, bold, unison exclamation and which vividly expresses the text and musical idea.
The choir will then delve into Renaissance repertoire with two madrigals, “Come, Let’s Begin,” and “Four Arms, Two Necks, One Wreathing.”
The program will also feature the contemporary choral work “Inscription of Hope.” Composed by Z. Randall Stroope, the piece was inspired by a poem from the Holocaust era that reflects resilience and hope.
The choir's treble singers will perform “Set Me as a Seal” by Bruce Tippett, a piece based on scripture in the Song of Solomon.
The concert will conclude on a different note as the ensemble presents “Vox Vibe” by Greg Gilpin. This piece has a jazz-infused style, is engaging rhythmically, and is sung on nonsense syllables.
