Dr. Andrey Cruz, director of the CU Concert Band, chose the repertoire for this concert to offer a dynamic mix of styles, historical significance and seasonal celebration, aiming to engage both performers and the audience.
The concert will open with John Philip Sousa’s “El Captian,” which pays homage to traditional United States concert band repertoire and which allows students to develop precision in classic march style. Next up will be “Timepiece” by Randall Standridge and “Sun Dance” by Frank Ticheli.
“These compositions bring contemporary contrast, with Standridge’s work challenging rhythmic complexity and Ticheli’s evoking an uplifting energy, ideal for expressive and dynamic playing,” Cruz says.
Leroy Anderson’s “A Christmas Festival” (made up of eight traditional Christmas carols) and “Sleigh Ride” usher in the holiday spirit with familiar, festive tunes that audiences love. The concert will conclude with a unique Latin touch with Cruz’s arrangement of “El Burrito Sabanero” by Hugo Blanco.
“This popular Latin American carol, which I arranged especially for the CU Concert Band, offers cultural diversity,” Cruz says. “Together, these selections highlight a variety of musical skills and create an enjoyable, well-rounded program.”
