Pickaxes esports team sets milestone at end of fall competition season




Cameron University’s esports team, the Pickaxes, wrapped up the fall season with a milestone, as each of the teams made the playoffs in their respective division. The Pickaxes faced multiple universities across the U.S. and Canada as they competed in Overwatch 2, Valorant, and Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

With a record of eight wins and one loss, the Overwatch 2 team made it to the championship match, facing the University of Minnesota. The Pickaxes fell to the Bulldogs 3-1 in a best of five contest. Primary players were Elijah Robertson, Fletcher; Jones Baskett, Grandfield; and Wyatt McClure, team captain Sarah Monk and Marquis Wartley, all of Lawton. Additional team members were Brody Folland, Cache; Matthew Hasley, Duncan; Perri Clay-Huff, Victoria Garcia, Justin Osun and, Frank Rabel Santos, all of Lawton; and Kennedy McKinzie, Marlow.

The Valorant team record took a record of seven wins and one loss to the quarterfinals, where it fell to the University of Guelph - Black 2-1 in a best of three match. Teams members were Kaddin Debertolis, Cache; JaMesia Burton, Elgin; Juan Joel Gonzalez and Jeramie McMichael,all of Lawton; Lanique Magee, Oklahoma City; and Ty Spence, Snyder.

CU’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate team tallied a record of five wins and three losses, making it to the first round of the playoffs. They were stopped by Louisiana State University – SSBU, falling 2-0 in a best of three contest. Team members were Josilyn Chapman, Cache; and Alina Firestone, Abigail Hensley and Jalen Johnson, all of Lawton.

The Pickaxes will be back in action once competition commences during the spring semester. Numerous matches will be streamed on the Pickaxes Twitch channel, https://twitch.tv/esportscu.
