The Cameron Collegian receives Sequoyah Award




The Cameron Collegian was the winner of the Sequoyah Award in the College Newspapers division of the Oklahoma Press Association’s (OPA) 2020 Best Newspaper Contest.

The Sequoyah Award is given to the publication that earns the most total points after being ranked in nine different categories within its division. The Collegian scored 470 points – 140 more points than the second place finisher. The Best Newspaper Contest also has 11 individual category awards.

OPA also selected The Cameron Collegian as first place winners in the Editorial Writing, Layout & Design, Photography, Sports Coverage and News Photography categories. In addition, The Collegian earned second place in Column Writing and Sports Photography.

In one category, Front Page Design, The Collegian received both second and third place awards. The judges also picked The Collegian as the third place winners for Feature Photography, News Content and Sports Story.

Judges in each category shared comments about the writers and reporters who won. Among the remarks about The Cameron Collegian staff were: “This writer is developing a voice that comes through in the editorials,” “The writer has clearly invested time and effort to research data supporting her opinions,” and “This is beautifully done, really appreciate the moment you captured.”

The Cameron Collegian is the official student newspaper of Cameron University. It is an operating free-press, printed by The Lawton Constitution and available across campus each Monday afternoon during the regular academic year.

The entirety of the newspaper, from planning to publication, is managed by an editorial staff completely comprised of CU undergraduate and graduate students. The Collegian abides by the code of ethics and campus media statements outlined by the Society of Professional Journalists.
