Winners of Cameron University’s sixth annual Student Art Competition announced




The Cameron University Department of Art, Music and Theatre Arts is pleased to announce the winners of its sixth annual Student Art Competition. The honorees were selected by Kenna Hand, a middle and high school art teacher at Navajo Public Schools and a graphic designer for Comanche Memorial Hospital. Hand is an adjunct faculty member, teaching graphic design courses.

The exhibition will be on display at CU’s Art Teaching Gallery, located in the Art Building, through February 21.

Lawton’s Mallory Cajas was honored with the first-place award in the Two-Dimensional Art category for her oil on canvas, “The Beheading of Jack Crouch.” Mathew Gonzalez, Lawton, earned second place with an oil on canvas titled “The Sleep of Reason.” Third place was awarded to Kanney Do, Lawton, for “Doomsday,” an oil on canvas.

In the Three-Dimensional Art category, Diane Denham of Medicine Park was awarded first place for “Conception,” a multimedia piece created from wood, canvas, acrylic paint and leather. Camilla Ramos of Lawton took second place with a metal, wood and resin sculpture titled “Harmonies.” Third place was awarded to “Dynamic Ascension,” a wood sculpture by Melissa Heilig of Fletcher.

Honorable mention awards were presented to Sabrina McClellan, Lawton, for “Forget Me Not,” an oil on canvas; Jaden Pebeahsy, Lawton, for “Game Night,” an oil on canvas; and Dayton Horn, Clinton, for a relief print titled “Mother Nature.”

April Luikart, Lawton, received the Award of Exceptionalism, an award selected by the CU art faculty which recognizes outstanding work across several media, as well as exceptional work ethic and prolific artwork production.
