Cameron University has named John Young as director of physical facilities. Currently serving as the university’s environmental health and safety officer, Young will take the position vacated by the retirement of Bob Hanefield effective January 10.

“John Young brings a broad portfolio of prior civilian employment and military service,” says John McArthur, president. “His experience and expertise in numerous areas including management, health and safety and leadership will benefit our campuses in Lawton and Duncan.”

Following his retirement from the U.S. Army, Young joined the CU’s Physical Facilities division in July 2019. He has served as the university’s environmental health and safety officer since January 2023.

As director of physical facilities, Young will be responsible for leadership, management and operations for facilities on Cameron’s Lawton and in Duncan campuses. Responsibilities include recruiting, professional development, support and supervision of personnel in central receiving, engineering, grounds and maintenance as well as coordination with external vendors for custodial services and with contractors for maintenance and construction. Duties include budget management, supervision and planning for the general care, maintenance and improvement of campus facilities, monitoring utilities and energy performance, developing bid specifications and coordinating bidding processes, negotiating contracts and overseeing construction or maintenance contracts for university facilities.

Young holds degrees from Florida State University-Panama City and Gulf Coast Community College.
