Chemistry, Physics and Engineering

Mission Statement

The Department of Chemistry, Physics, and Engineering at Cameron University:

Provides both a liberal arts and professional education in the Physical Sciences and Engineering at the undergraduate level by providing:

  1. A rigorous basic education in chemistry and physics both in theory and practice at various levels appropriate for students to prepare to become professionals in their selected fields of study as a major in chemistry or physics;
  2. An education appropriate for those students preparing to teach science in the secondary schools;
  3. Provide two years of education for students within the field of engineering;
  4. Coursework appropriate for students to understand physical science as part of their General education curriculum; and
  5. Theory and practice in the physical sciences for those students preparing for healthcare and other careers requiring chemistry and physics.

Welcome to the Department of Chemistry, Physics, and Engineering

Come and explore the molecular frontier, the world of physical phenomena, and the insights into engineering constructs. Advances in technology rely on these three fields: Chemistry, Physics, and Engineering. If you have considered a career as a chemist, physicist, engineer, biochemist, research scientist, physician, dentist, pharmacist, optometrist, teacher, or entrepreneur, you have come to the right place. Many of our alumni are currently in these fields and are successful because of their experience at Cameron University. Our faculty members provide students a strong educational foundation and the ability to communicate and think critically and creatively. All of our students are concurrent, traditional, non-traditional, or transfer type students. We welcome them all.

Our Bachelor of Science degree with a major in chemistry has many options to meet your career aspirations. The field of chemistry is for students who want to work in the chemical industry or pursue graduate studies in the chemical sciences or pursue professional studies in the health industry. One of the options within our chemistry program is certified by the American Chemical Society’s Committee on Professional Training.

Our Bachelor of Science degree with a major in physics also has many options to meet your career aspirations. The field of physics is for students who want to work in the electrical or optical industry or pursue graduate studies in theoretical or applied physics or pursue professional studies in the health industry.

Our Associate of Applied Science with a major in engineering has five options: mechanical, electrical, civil, industrial, or environmental. We provide the first two years of experience and coursework to be completed at Cameron University and then the student pursues work in industry or chooses to complete their four-year degree at another university such as the University of Oklahoma or Oklahoma State University.

The Department of Chemistry, Physics, and Engineering is dedicated to excellence in education and undergraduate research. Many faculty members are involved in research and mentor undergraduate projects spanning a diverse area of chemistry, physics, and engineering. Much of this research is supported through grants and department facilities. Our facilities include modern instrumentation techniques using spectroscopy, electrochemistry, chromatography, mass spectroscopy, calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis.

Beyond the classroom and research, there are numerous opportunities for students to be involved in the department. The students participate in various clubs and organizations that promote the chemical & physical sciences as well as engineering. Chemistry Club and Engineering Club are award-winning. Students within these majors have provided tutorial services, gone to area public schools to perform chemical magic shows and physics circus presentations, participate in field trips to area industry, and more.

We hope you will come visit our state-of-the-art facility and talk with our faculty members about your interest in chemistry, physics, or engineering and determine what we can do for you. Students interested in any aspect our programs should contact the Chair of the Department of Chemistry, Physics, and Engineering, Cameron University, 2800 West Gore Blvd., Lawton, OK 73505, phone 580-581-2246 or at Kmoore@cameron.edu.
