The Department of Communication, English and Foreign Languages supports Cameron University's mission of offering educational opportunities for a diverse student body. The program strives to develop students' intellectual capacities, prepares students for entry into graduate school and communication-related professions, and plays a role in general education.
The Department of Communication, English and Foreign Languages supports Cameron University's mission by providing student-centered courses designed by dedicated faculty members who have extensive knowledge and experience in their fields and a deep commitment to teaching, scholarship, and service. The Department prides itself on exposing students to an array of studies in the fields of language, literature, and writing which will prepare them to contribute to communities at home and abroad by fostering cultural awareness; developing individual critical, analytical, and creative capacities; and encouraging habits of the mind that will facilitate success in rapidly changing academic and professional worlds.

Cameron offers the following degrees within our department: Associate in Arts in Strategic Communication, Bachelor of Arts in Strategic Communication with options in Communication Studies and Public Relations, Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Media Production, Bachelor of Arts in English with options in Creative Writing and Literature, Bachelor of Arts in English Education and Bachelor of Arts in International Languages.

Strategic Communication, Communication Studies and Public Relations, Journalism and Media Production, English and International Languages students have excellent opportunities to network with corporations and professionals in the region. All students are encouraged to participate in internships as well as presenting scholarly papers at conferences.
Students at Cameron University also have the opportunity to participate with Cameron's Speech and Debate Team. The program has had a long history of excellence and awards.
Students may also participate in CU’s esports team, The Pickaxes. The Pickaxes, CU’s esports team, competes at the varsity level in “Valorant” and “Overwatch,” as well as “Rocket League” and “Super Smash Bros.” CU students compete with other universities and in events throughout the year for a chance to win prizes and scholarships and prestige. Established with a generous grant from the McMahon Foundation in 2019, The Pickaxes is open for tryouts to all full-time CU students. Esport athletes are required to have a minimum GPA and attend scheduled practices, scrimmages, tournaments and events through the regular school year.
If you are looking to major in English, there are two emphases at Cameron University: Literature and Creative Writing. The Literature emphasis is designed for students contemplating graduate work, including law school; for students desiring careers in technical writing, editing, public relations and the like; and for students desiring a broad general background in literature.
The Bachelor of Arts with a major in English Education prepares students to teach English at the junior high/middle school and high school levels. Students take a combination of courses in literature, writing, English grammar and linguistics, and secondary teaching methods, culminating in a student teaching semester. Courses help prepare students for Oklahoma state teacher certification.
The Bachelor of Arts in International Languages degree provides students the opportunity to develop language combinations tailored to their interests and career goals. Students choose both a primary language from options that include French, German, or Spanish and a secondary language from options that include French, German, Russian, or Spanish. All course work emphasizes the development of both written and oral language proficiency.
